Basilico Emulation Best Of

Here are my six favorite images from my series project emulating Gabriele Basilico. I learned a few interesting things during this series. First, a reminder that photography is all about preparation. Architectural/city landscape photography requires a lot of work just to get to the right angles/perspectives. I also learned a lot about the possible usages of negative space, an aspect of composition I didn't usually consider in the past. I returned to shoot in black and white for the first time in a while, and I think I learned not to overload the contrast and exposure in the editing process of said shots. It's something I used to do when I first started shooting black and white, and I lost a lot of the more interesting details in my photographs because of that. Anyways...

Basilico Emulation Third Draft

The third draft of my series emulating the Italian architectural photographer Gabriele Basilico. I continued with the same themes, and focusing on simple colors and negative space in the compositional aspects of my work. I also shot some in the rain, which provided some really good lighting.

Basilico Emulation Second Draft

Here's the second draft of my series emulating the style of Italian architectural photographers Gabriele Basilico. Here I continued to focus on the usage of negative space in my composition, and using simple lighting and black and white to accentuate. This was also my first time shooting with a wide angle lens.

Basilico Emulation First Draft

Here's my first draft emulating Gabriele Basilico's photography. Architectural and cityscape photography was something I'd never done, so I struggled with this assignment. The first challenge is simply logistic, finding unique architectural areas. I was hoping to emulate the narrative qualities of Basilico's work: as in the idea of architecture being representative of a city and the people within it as a whole. I was also hoping to emulate the composition of some of Basilico's shot: such as the usage of negative space and the wide and removed perspective he shot from. It's just a first draft, and I feel I'll better emulate this traits in future attempts.

Night Photography Second Draft

Here's the second draft of my night photography series. I shifted my focus away from motion, but remained looking towards light to bring another aspect to my shots. I originally planned to shoot primarily in black & white, but I found the natural color of many of the shots to be preferable. Editing-wise I kept things simple, only really doing some color-balance when the temperature of the photo was a bit much.

Motion and Night

This is my first draft of my newest series; a combination of motion and night photography. I wanted to go in with a very specific idea that I could really flesh out through multiple nights of shooting. I focused on long-exposure shots of light at night. I had some initial problems with my shots being overwhelming by extraneous light, but I solved the problem by using a tripod and raising my f stop. The editing process was fairly simple as I didn't do much outside of reduce the temperature of the colors and some minor cropping. Click on the images for full resolution.

Dan Eldon Collage

Our most recent project was  creating and shooting a collage, inspired by the collages of photojournalist Dan Eldon. Eldon had a subtle way of telling a story through a collage, and the message very often related to the real problems he encountered in his travels. The hardest part of this series was the actual shooting and editing of the collage; attempting to find a way to take away the "papery" look to it. I was happy with the result, though more comprehensive editing options may have helped.

Graphic Notation Grids

This series is a continuation of our graphic notation work, but in grid format. I only used dual-grids here, as I wanted to allow for more detail in each portion of the collage.

Graphic Notation

Our most recent assignment was Graphic Notation, one of the more challenging series I've faced at Drew. Graphic Notation is the representation of music through something visual, in our case, photos. I focused on more abstract shots, looking for rhythm and variation. Some shots required heavy editing to really bring out the parts of the shot I wanted to be focused on, while others only required quick simple changes.

Perspective Assignment

Our first challenge of the year was perspective. We were instructed to view one object from multiple different angles. I chose a wall garden. I mostly utilized simple editing, but with one shot I created significant color contrast to really bring out the photo.
